A peshtemal is a simple thing: a flat-woven cotton cloth, usually around 80–100 cm wide and 160–190 cm long. That simplicity is why it works in so many places.

The peshtemal's first home is the bath. It wraps around the body, absorbs water and dries quickly between uses, which is why hammams and spas still use it today.
Beach and pool
On the beach a peshtemal does the job of a towel, a sarong and a sun-lounger cover. Sand shakes off a flat weave more easily than off a looped pile, and the cloth is light to carry. Larger sizes such as 140×170 cm work as beach blankets.
